How To: Use Item Attributes (Additional Reporting Fields)

Item Attributes in Yellow Dog Inventory allow you to add custom data fields to items, beyond the standard fields (e.g., Description, UPC, Vendor). Attributes are flexible, user-defined properties that help you organize, search, and report on items in ways unique to your business.

Attributes can capture key details such as season, commission rates, allergen information, or any other property not already covered in system fields. Once created, attributes can be assigned to items, filtered in item views, and leveraged in reports.

All client types can take advantage of item attributes.

To create a new item attribute:
  1. Go to Common Setup > Attributes > Item Attributes.

  2. Click Create New Attribute.

  3. Enter the name of the attribute in the Description field.

  4. Select the attribute type from the Type dropdown.

  5. Optional: Use the Help Text field to provide extra details or guidance about the attribute.
This text will be visible to users on the On-Form Help when they are setting the item attribute, helping them understand how to use it correctly.

  6. Optional: Use the Report Description field to enter a name for the attribute in reporting. If this is left blank the description of the item attribute will be used.

  7. Optional: use the avliable boxes to mark if this attribute is required, inactive, read only or hidden.

  8. If you chose the item attribute type Selection, click Create New Options to create the selection options. This is the only type that will require options to be created.

  9. Click Save and Close.

To assign an item attribute to an item:
  1. Open the Item Editor.

  2. Navigate to the Attributes tab.

  3. Fill in the attribute value.

  4. Click Save and Close.

To view item attributes in item related reports:

  2. Click change columns, sorting and grouping.

  3. Type Item Attribute in the Search field.
