Feature Overview: Item Attributes

Feature Overview: Item Attributes

Item Attributes in Yellow Dog Inventory allow you to add custom data fields to items, beyond the standard fields (e.g., Description, UPC, Vendor). Attributes are flexible, user-defined properties that help you organize, search, and report on items in ways unique to your business.

Attributes can capture key details such as season, commission rates, allergen information, or any other property not already covered in system fields. Once created, attributes can be assigned to items, filtered in item views, and leveraged in reports.

Common Setup > Attributes > Item Attributes

  1. Customizable Fields: You can create attributes that go beyond standard item details.
    1. Flexible enough to capture any property that matters to your business (e.g., “Season,” “Organic,” “Commission Rate,” “Allergen Info”).

  2. Multiple Data Types: Yellow Dog supports a wide variety of attribute types
    1. Text (free entry)
    2. Integer / Number (whole or decimal values)
    3. Money (currency)
    4. Boolean (true/false checkboxes)
    5. DateTime, Time, Date (first received date, date to remove from ordering schedule)
    6. Selection (drop-down menus, with multi-select)
    7. Easy Item Assignment: Easily edit values in the Item Editor under the Attributes tab.

  3. Enhances Searching & Filtering: Items can be filtered by attributes using the Attribute Views under Item Management > Inventory Items.

  4. Reporting Integration: Attributes appear in item-based reports, giving you extra ways to group, sort, and analyze inventory.

  5. Consistency & Control:
    1. Item Attributes can be marked as required, ensuring the attribute is set anytime an item is created.
    2. Selection-type attributes enforce consistent values across items (no spelling or formatting errors).

  6. Scalability: There’s no strict limit—you can create as many attributes as your business requires.
    1. Great for both simple retail use cases (e.g., Color, Material) and complex F&B operations (e.g., Varietal, Region, Allergen).

  1. Keep it simple: Define only the attributes you need to avoid clutter.

  2. Use Selection fields when possible: This ensures consistency in data entry.

  3. Plan ahead: Think through reporting and filtering needs before creating attributes.

  4. Audit regularly: Review attributes to ensure they’re still relevant.
