Feature Overview: POS Sync Communication Types (1-way vs. 2-way)

This article explains the difference between 1-way POS sync and 2-way POS sync as they apply to Yellow Dog Inventory. Understanding how data flows between your POS system and Yellow Dog helps ensure accurate inventory, pricing, and reporting.

What Is POS Sync?
POS sync refers to the automated exchange of data between your Point of Sale (POS) system and Yellow Dog Inventory. Depending on the integration and configuration, data may flow in one direction only or in both directions.

The sync type determines:
  1. Where items are created and maintained
  2. How inventory quantities are updated
  3. Whether changes made in Yellow Dog are reflected back in the POS

1-Way POS Sync
In a 1-way POS sync, data flows from the POS system into Yellow Dog Inventory only. Yellow Dog receives information from the POS, but does not send updates back.

How It Works
  1. Items are created and managed in the POS system
  2. Sales transactions are sent from the POS to Yellow Dog
  3. For sales to create on-hand adjustments in Yellow Dog, POS mapping must be completed
  4. Any changes made in Yellow Dog do not update the POS

Client Type
A 1-way sync is typically used for Food and Beverage operations or when a POS only offers a 1-way integration.

2-Way POS Sync
In a 2-way POS sync, data flows between Yellow Dog Inventory and the POS system. Both systems actively exchange information based on defined rules.

How It Works
  1. Items are created in Yellow Dog and pushed to the POS
  2. Item updates are completed in Yellow Dog and pushed to the POS
  3. Sales transactions flow from the POS to Yellow Dog and update inventory levels in Yellow Dog

Client Type
A 2-way sync is typically used for Retail and Concessions operations.

Summary
  1. 1-way POS sync sends data from the POS to Yellow Dog only.
  2. 2-way POS sync allows Yellow Dog and the POS to exchange data.
  3. Each sync type supports different operational models.
