Troubleshooting: Printed Labels Are Too Light or Too Dark

Troubleshooting: Printed Labels Are Too Light or Too Dark

Applies to ZT411 and ZT421 industrial label printers used with Yellow Dog Inventory

ISSUE

Printing is too light or too dark across the whole label, or noticeably lighter on one side. Barcodes may not scan and text or images may look faint or smeared.

CAUSE

Light or dark printing on the ZT411 or ZT421 usually traces to one of these causes:

The printer is set to an incorrect darkness level, or paired with the wrong ribbon.

The media or ribbon isn't designed for high-speed printing.

Printhead pressure needs adjustment — especially when printing is uneven from one side to the other.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Start with darkness and speed, which resolve most cases. If printing is still uneven, adjust the printhead pressure.

Adjust darkness and print speed

1.    On the Home screen, touch Menu > Print > Print Quality.

2.    Set the print darkness to the lowest setting that still produces good print quality.

3.    Lower the print speed. Slower speeds typically yield better print quality.

4.    Print a label and check the result. Repeat until quality is acceptable.

! CAUTION — DON'T OVERSHOOT DARKNESS

Set darkness to the lowest setting that prints well. Too high, and the image may print unclearly, barcodes may not scan, the ribbon may burn through, or the printhead may wear out early.

Adjust printhead pressure

If darkness and speed don't resolve it — or printing is lighter on one side — adjust the two printhead pressure dials. Use the inside dial (1) and outside dial (2); each is marked 1 to 4. Start at the values below for your printer and media width, set as low as possible, then increase until quality is acceptable.

Adjust from the starting point as needed:

Media needs more pressure to print well: increase both dials one position.

Prints too light on the left side: increase the inside dial one position.

Prints too light on the right side: increase the outside dial one position.

RESOLUTION

Match the cause to its fix:

CAUSE

RESOLUTION

Incorrect darkness or wrong ribbon

Set darkness to the lowest level that prints well, and confirm the media-and-ribbon combination is compatible for the application.

Media or ribbon not rated for high speed

Lower the print speed, or replace supplies with those recommended for high-speed operation.

Incorrect or uneven printhead pressure

Set both pressure dials to the starting points for your printer and media width, then increase as needed until print quality is even and acceptable.

VERIFICATION STEPS

1.    Print a label after each adjustment.

2.    Confirm printing is even across the full label, with no light or dark side.

3.    Confirm the barcode scans and text and images are crisp.

WHEN TO CONTACT SUPPORT

Contact Yellow Dog Support if print quality is still unacceptable after adjusting darkness, speed, and pressure, and:

Printing stays uneven at the maximum useful pressure setting.

Quality is poor even with media and ribbon rated for the print speed.

The printhead is clean but the label still prints faint or smeared.
