Troubleshooting: Data Light Flashing and Labels Will Not Print

Troubleshooting: Data Light Flashing and Labels Will Not Print

Applies to ZT411 and ZT421 industrial label printers used with Yellow Dog Inventory and Balto

ISSUE

The data light on the printer is flashing, and labels will not print. Print jobs may appear to send but never produce a label.

CAUSE

A flashing data light usually means the printer received data but can't complete the job, most often because of a connection problem between the printer, the network, and Balto. Common causes:

     Loss of internet connection.

Loss of power at the printer or router.

    Poor network connectivity.

A stuck print job, or the wrong printer or label settings selected in Balto.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Work through these steps in order, stopping when printing resumes. The fixes are grouped by where you'll perform them: on the printer, on the client PC, and in Balto.

On the printer

1.    Power cycle the printer — turn it off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on.

2.    Check the wired connections to the printer and router, and reseat any that are loose.

3.    Clear any queued print jobs on the printer by pressing the Cancel button.

4.    Confirm the printer is reachable on the network: from the client PC, ping the printer's IP address. If it doesn't respond, the issue is the network or power — not Balto.

On the client PC

1.    Open the printer queue on the PC and clear any stuck or pending print jobs.

1.    Confirm the correct printer is selected.

2.    Confirm the correct label size and format are selected.

3.    If the correct printer is already set, click the red status pop-up notification, choose to refresh, and select Reconfigure Printer for Label.

ℹ NOTE — RECALIBRATE AFTER RECONFIGURING

After reconfiguring the printer for the label in Balto, recalibrate the printer so the media and ribbon sensors match the current label. See the related calibration article.

RESOLUTION

Match the cause to its fix:

CAUSE

RESOLUTION

Loss of internet or power

Restore power to the printer and router, confirm the internet connection is up, then power cycle the printer.

Poor network connectivity

Check and reseat wired connections, then ping the printer to confirm it's reachable before resending the job.

Stuck print job

Clear queued jobs on the printer with the Cancel button and clear the printer queue on the client PC.

Wrong settings in Balto

Confirm the correct printer, label size, and format in Balto. If the printer is already correct, use the red status pop-up to refresh and reconfigure the printer for the label.

VERIFICATION STEPS

1.    Confirm the data light is no longer flashing.

2.    Send a test print job from Balto.

3.    Confirm a label prints with the correct size and format.

 WHEN TO CONTACT SUPPORT

Contact Yellow Dog Support if labels still won't print after you've worked through every step above, and:

The printer powers on but the data light keeps flashing.

The printer doesn't respond to a ping from the client PC.

Print jobs clear but no label prints, even with the correct printer and label settings confirmed in Balto.
