Retail: Individual SKU Setup

Retail: Individual SKU Setup

VIDEO

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT

The retail item card holds every detail Yellow Dog Inventory uses to identify, price, and track a product. When you set these fields correctly, you get accurate point-of-sale (POS) descriptions, reliable retail pricing, and item data you can sort, filter, and report on. This reference explains what each field does so you can decide which ones your operation needs.

 HIGHLIGHTS

Item identification

SKU — The unique number that identifies the item. Let Yellow Dog auto-generate it whenever possible to keep numbering consistent.

Style number — Often doubles as the part number you give the vendor when ordering.

Reference — A flexible field for any note that helps you identify the item, such as case quantity (for example, “25 count”).

Descriptions

Long description and short description — Two description fields so you can work around POS character limits. Use them to generate different POS descriptions, or reuse the same text on labels and purchase orders.

Pricing

Markup and margin — Dynamic fields. Adjust either one and Yellow Dog recalculates the retail price automatically.

MSRP — The manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Enter it to print a price comparison on labels.

Starting retail — Capture the original retail price so you can track markdowns over time.

Default retail — The retail price that applies across all stores.

Dimensions

Dimensions are custom fields you define to organize items for searching, filtering, and reporting. Up to 10 are visible at once, and the set is expandable. Common uses include:

Pricing stage — original, markdown 1, markdown 2, or promo.

Label type — the label size (for example, 2x1 or 1x1) used to manage the printing queue.

Restocking status — restock or one-time buy.

Product attributes — size, color, hat bill type, team or player info, or holiday and event ties.

Logo details — which logo applies and where it’s placed.

 BEST PRACTICES

Use dimensions to drive everyday tasks, not just to store data:

Sort labels by dimension to route each batch to the correct printer.

Filter purchase orders by logo or event information to pull exactly the items you need.

Adapt dimensions to your own business needs — the fields are flexible by design.

Note: Field names and availability can vary by configuration. If a field described here doesn’t appear on your item card, check with your administrator or Yellow Dog Support.
