How To: Create a Retail Item (Individual SKU)

Creating a retail item correctly ensures accurate counts, reliable reporting, and smooth POS syncing. It sets the foundation for trustworthy data across the entire Yellow Dog system.

WarningNote: The below steps cover the required actions for creating a retail item as an individual SKU. Depending on your company’s item creation process, you may need to complete additional configuration—such as UPCs, images, or interface settings. For an overview of these optional steps, refer to the video.
  1. Navigate to Item Management
    1. Go to Item Management > Inventory Items.
    2. On the right side of the screen, select Create New Item.

  2. Enter Basic Item Information in the SKU Wizard
    1. Levels: Choose the appropriate Level.
    2. Vendor & Manufacturer: Select or add the vendor/manufacturer that supplies this item.
    3. Once details are entered, click OK.

  3. Add Additional Item Information on the Retail Details Tab of the Item Editor
    1. Description: Enter the item name/description as it should appear in Yellow Dog and reports.
    2. Assign to Stores: If you manage multiple stores in your Yellow Dog Inventory, assign the item to the correct stores.
    3. Size: Represents the item size (typically set as Each for individual SKU retail items).
    4. Vendor Price: The cost of purchasing the item from the vendor.
    5. Current Retail: The selling price.

  4. Save Item
    1. Review all required fields for accuracy (description, levels, size, vendor, cost, retail).
    2. Click Save and Close to save the item and exit the editor.
