FAQs: What's the difference between inactive and removed items?
Q: What's the difference between inactive and removed items?
A: When managing your item catalog in Yellow Dog Inventory, you may need to retire products that are not currently in use. The system provides two distinct options for doing this: Inactive and Removed:
Inactive Items
Key Characteristics:
-
The item remains in your database for reporting and historical tracking purposes.
-
Inactive status is reversible; you can reactivate the item if it becomes relevant again.
Items must have a zero on-hand to update the status to inactive.
When to Use:
Removed Items
Key Characteristics:
The item itself will not appear in future reporting or searches. This does no affect prior finalized transactions, historical data tied to those transactions remains intact.
This status is revisable, but is intended for permanent use.
Items must have a zero on-hand to update the status to removed.
When to Use:
Inactive vs. Removed Example Scenarios
Scenario | Recommended Action | Why |
Seasonal item like a holiday mug | Inactive | Allows reactivation next season |
Vendor temporarily out of stock | Inactive | Maintains continuity if vendor restocks |
Duplicate item record accidentally created | Remove | Prevents confusion and maintains clean inventory |
