Troubleshooting: Invoice Staging Email Error: Unsupported Attachment Type
When sending an invoice to Invoice Staging, you receive an error like:
“The following attachments were prevented from sending for additional processing — ATTACHMENT NAME.pdf — application/octet-stream is not an image or pdf type that is supported.”
Figure: Example of the email error response

- Your email provider or email application is labeling the PDF attachment as an unrecognized MIME type (for example,
application/octet-stream). When this happens, the attachment is blocked from being processed. - Email providers commonly flag or change MIME types as a security measure to reduce malware risk.
- Yellow Dog can process these file types for Invoice Staging:
- application/pdf
- image/jpeg
- image/png
- If your email provider flags the attachment, Yellow Dog cannot override that behavior.
- Results can vary by workstation depending on email application settings.
- Download the invoice attachment to your computer.
- Confirm it is a supported file type (PDF, JPG/JPEG, or PNG).
- Create a new email and attach the downloaded file.
- Send it to invoicestaging@yellowdogsoftware.com.
- Avoid forwarding the vendor’s email with the original attachment.
You’ll know it worked when you receive the automated confirmation email indicating the Vendor Approvals team received your invoice and is processing it.
Contact Yellow Dog Support if you:
-
Downloaded the attachment,
-
Confirmed it’s a supported format, and
-
Still receive the same unexpected error response.
