Troubleshooting: Access to Path Error

Troubleshooting: Access to Path Error

When launching Yellow Dog Inventory after installation or upgrade, you receive the following error:

Figure 1. Access to path 'C:\Program Files\YellowDogInventory\settings.ini' is denied error message.

When you first install or update Yellow Dog, Windows sometimes blocks the program from saving its setup files. This happens because Windows is very strict about what programs can do in the Program Files folder, and it doesn’t let Yellow Dog write there unless it’s run with extra permissions.

To resolve, run Yellow Dog Inventory with Administrator privileges:
  1. Open File Explorer and navigate to C:\Program Files\YellowDogInventory.

  2. Right-click the YDInv application.

  3. Select Run as Administrator.
If you do not have administrator rights on your computer and are prompted for a password you don’t know, please contact your on-site IT team for help. The Yellow Dog team cannot make changes to Windows permissions on your local PC.

  4. If prompted with the message, Do you want to allow this app from an unknown publisher to make changes to your device? click Yes.
Yellow Dog Inventory will now launch.

Info
Note: These steps are only required initially after the program is installed, or the first time the program is being launched post upgrade.
